Let me sleep on it !

To a salesperson, a common stalling tactic by the prospect, you try to avoid at all costs, to the prospect a way to avoid making a decision on something, which you are still not 100% convinced by – “let me sleep on it and I’ll get back to you tomorrow”!

However, there is more to the phrase than you might expect, indeed it COULD actually be sincere. The vid “Why sleep is critical for the body and brain” https://youtu.be/oTlJnyF3REs goes to great lengths to explain what happens during sleep, the benefits of a good night’s sleep and conversely the drawbacks of not enough sleep.

As an early bird, but one who often either gets to bed too late or wakes up in the middle of the night (nature calling!) and then only catnaps until that effin alarm clocks goes off, this was an eye-opener (sorry couldn’t resist) and has prompted me to sleep on my future sleeping habits. I can smell a 30 day experiment getting my head down by max. 9 p.m. to be able to get up at 5 a.m.

Benjamin Franklin is quoted to have said: “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise” So I’ll get back to you when I’ve run a marathon, made my millions and read the Encyclopedia Britannica – don’t hold your breath.

BTW the “What I’ve learned” channel has also produced a follow-up on “How to get more quality sleep” https://youtu.be/q9q3hfsPYpM and I can highly recommend all of his videos because they are all well-researched and very informative.

stalling tactic (Hinhaltetaktik), prospect (Interessent), at all costs (um jeden Preis), to be convinced (überzeugt sein), however (jedoch), sincere (aufrichtig), to go to great lengths (sich sehr bemühen), benefits (Vorteile), conversely (umgekehrt), drawbacks (Nachteile), nature calling (hier: auf Toilette gehen), to catnap (dösen), effin’ (fucking), to resist (wiederstehen), to prompt sb to do sth (jdn dazu bewegen, etw zu tun), habits (Angewohnheiten), to get one’s head down (schlafen gehen), to quote sb (zittieren), to rise (aufstehen), wealthy (wohlhabend), wise (weise), “don’t hold your breath” (Das kann dauern), to highly recommend sth (sehr empfehlen), well-researched (gut recherchiert).

Actually, that’s already my daily routine: going to bed by 9 pm and getting up at 4 am. For me that’s perfect. However, slight deviations from this pattern (keyword „neighbours above me“ 😉 ) might turn me into a grumpy person in the morning but, just in case, even that doesn’t last long then. I’m definitely an early bird.
