Wednesday Tiny Titbit – Confusing words 1.

“The report reveals (enthüllen) serious floors in security at the airport.” This sentence could be found in any newspaper article, especially with the current heightened (erhöhte) terror threat (Terrorbedrohung).

Anything strike you? Of course, “floors” doesn’t make any sense in this context. “Flaws” (same pronunciation, Fehler, Mangel, see above context: Sicherheitslücke), however, does make sense.

So if an argument “is flawed” it means “there is/are a mistake(s) in it, which makes it ineffective (as an argument)”. But if someone “is floored”, it means knocked to the ground usually as a result of being hit/punched etc.
