‘Fathom‘, ‘understand‘ and ‘get one’s head around sth‘ are synonyms meaning ‚‘to understand in the sense of finding an explanation for sth. However, ‘Fathom‘ is more formal whereas ‘get one’s head around sth‘ is more colloquial.
Here are examples I made earlier to show you them in action:
“I can’t fathom how somebody could do such a thing“.
“I can’t understand how somebody could do such a thing“.
“I can’t get my head around how somebody could do such a thing“.
